AEO Guide
What Is AEO (Answer Engine Optimization)?
Short answer: AEO (Answer Engine Optimization) is the practice of structuring your website so AI assistants - ChatGPT, Google's AI Overviews, Perplexity, Gemini - pull your business in as the answer when someone asks them a question. Traditional SEO tries to rank in a list of blue links; AEO tries to be the source the AI actually quotes inside its generated answer. The two overlap, but AEO leans harder on answer-first writing and machine-readable structured data.
TL;DR - AEO at a glance
- SEO wins a spot in the search results. AEO wins the AI answer above them.
- AI assistants cite sources that are fast, well-structured, and state facts plainly.
- The core moves: answer-first pages, clear Q&A content, and structured data (schema).
- Good SEO is the foundation; AEO is the layer that makes you quotable.
- House4Code builds every site AEO-ready by default, then offers it as ongoing work.
What does "answer engine" actually mean?
An answer engine is any tool that responds to a question with a single, composed answer instead of a page of links. Ask ChatGPT "who's a good plumber in my area," ask Google something and read the AI Overview at the top, or ask Perplexity for a recommendation - in every case a model is reading sources, deciding which to trust, and writing one answer. AEO is the work of being one of those trusted sources. If your business never gets cited, you don't exist in that answer, no matter how good your service is.
How is AEO different from SEO?
They share a foundation but optimize for different finish lines. Here's the honest comparison:
| SEO | AEO | |
|---|---|---|
| Goal | Rank in the list of results | Be cited inside the AI's answer |
| Where it shows | Google, Bing results pages | ChatGPT, AI Overviews, Perplexity, Gemini |
| What it rewards | Keywords, links, authority, speed | Clear answers, facts, structured data, speed |
| Winning unit | A page that ranks | A sentence an AI can quote |
Notice the overlap: speed, clean structure, and accurate information help both. That's why AEO is rarely wasted effort - the work that makes you quotable also tends to lift your traditional rankings.
How do AI assistants decide who to cite?
No one has the exact recipe, but the patterns are consistent across the major assistants. They favor pages that:
- Answer the question directly and early - the first sentence states the answer, not background
- State facts plainly - prices, service areas, hours, and what you do, written as clear claims rather than marketing fog
- Carry structured data - schema markup (LocalBusiness, Service, FAQ) that lets a machine read your facts without guessing
- Load fast and clean - lightweight pages a crawler can parse instantly, not bloated builders
- Match question phrasing - real questions your customers ask, answered in their words
How do I make my website AEO-ready?
You don't need to chase every AI platform. You need a site built to be quotable. The checklist I work from:
- Open every page with the answer. Lead with a one- or two-sentence direct response, then expand.
- Add real Q&A content. Use the questions customers actually ask, with concise answers an assistant can lift whole.
- Mark it up with schema. LocalBusiness, Service, and FAQ structured data turn your facts into machine-readable claims.
- Keep your facts current and consistent. Name, services, area, and hours should match across your site and your Google Business Profile.
- Stay fast. Speed is a shared signal - slow pages hurt both SEO and AEO.
This is the same answer-first, structured approach I documented in how this site itself was built - I apply it to every client project, not just my own.
Do I still need SEO if I'm doing AEO?
Yes. Most people still search the normal way, the local map pack still drives calls, and AI answers frequently pull from the same well-ranked pages. AEO isn't a replacement for SEO - it's the next layer on top of it. The smart move is to build both together from the start, which is exactly why I bundle baseline local SEO and AEO into every website and offer ongoing work for businesses that want to keep climbing.
