What is local SEO?

Local SEO is the work of getting your business in front of nearby customers the moment they search for what you offer - in Google's map pack, in the regular results, and increasingly inside AI answers. Unlike national SEO, it's anchored to a place: "plumber near me," "dentist in [city]," "emergency electrician [neighborhood]." Win those and the phone rings. The good news for a small business is that the playing field is local, so you're competing with a handful of nearby businesses, not the whole internet.

Step 1: Claim and optimize your Google Business Profile

Your Google Business Profile (the panel with your map pin, hours, and reviews) is the single biggest local ranking factor you control. Claim it, then fill in everything: correct categories, every service, service area, hours, phone, website link, and real photos. Add products or services with descriptions, post updates, and answer questions. An empty or half-finished profile is the most common reason a good local business is invisible on the map.

Step 2: Make your name, address, and phone consistent everywhere

Google trusts businesses whose details line up across the web. Your NAP - name, address, phone - should be byte-for-byte identical on your website, your Google Business Profile, Facebook, directories, and anywhere else you're listed. "St." in one place and "Street" in another, or two different phone numbers, sends a mixed signal. Pick one exact format and use it everywhere.

Step 3: Build a page for each service and area

One "Services" page that lists everything will never rank as well as a dedicated page per service. People search for specific things, so give each its own page - "AC repair," "drain cleaning," "Invisalign" - written to answer that exact search. If you serve multiple towns, add area pages too. This is exactly how I structure the HVAC, plumber, and contractor sites I build: each core service earns its own rankable, conversion-focused page.

Step 4: Earn reviews - and respond to them

Reviews drive both rankings and the decision to call. Ask every happy customer, make it easy with a direct review link, and aim for a steady trickle rather than a one-time burst. Then reply to all of them - positive and negative - in a calm, human voice. Responding shows Google the profile is active and shows prospects you're attentive. Never buy fake reviews; it's against the rules and it's transparent to customers.

Step 5: Add local content and structured data

Publish content that proves you're local and useful: service explainers, neighborhood guides, FAQs, and answers to the real questions customers ask. Then make it machine-readable with structured data - LocalBusiness, Service, and FAQ schema - so search engines (and AI assistants) can read your facts without guessing. This is also the foundation of AEO: the same clean, factual structure that helps you rank is what gets you cited in AI answers.

Step 6: Make the site fast and mobile-first

Most local searches happen on a phone, often with a customer ready to call. A slow, clunky mobile site quietly loses those people - and speed is a ranking signal for both Google and AI answer engines. Lightweight pages, compressed images, and a tap-to-call number do more for local conversions than any clever trick.
